Traditional Urbanism.

April 2014.

The worlds population is growing at an exponential rate, disproportionate to that of available space. Statistics show that by 2050, 80% of the global population will reside in urban centres. This rise has been compounded by the rise of technology and free movement across the world, it does however pose a serious threat to the standard and condition of the aforementioned urban centres. Notable impacts of a rising population are evident in even todays societies, urban sprawl most prominently has destabalised the fragile balance between the built environment and our natural surroundings. It is with these staments in mind that the future scenarios intervention looks to urban implosion as a solution, this comprises utilising brownfield and abandoned sites, alongside the re purposing of the pre existing, it is this mindset that forms the basis for the conceptual thinking in the project.

The future scenarios intervention is manifested in the form of a complete highstreet redesign in an attempt to create a more coherent, user oriented social landscape. The newly created space from the shifting of the pre exiting highstreet creates a large expansive urban area tapered at one end. The purpose of ustilising the entire space in a diverse manner of ways intends for the highstreet to become a place of activity and life. People are innately drawn to other people; it is therefore key to address the need for arrest on the highstreet. Micro environments are created within the whole to allow the user to perceive the space differently with each visit.

The architectural language used is a continuation from the music school proposal, the deluge of columns and grids are principles aimed at de materialising Poole and creating a more transparent atmosphere in the space. As did the music school, so the high street intervention emanates from a single geometry, each pathway or area becomes suggestive of the next allowing for the user to remain spatially aware at all times, this quality is cited as being key to creating a socially harmonious environment.
With regards to the human scale, the introduction of ground level micro farms allows the user to dictate the environment in which they inhabit, this in turn creates a sense of responsibility and the environment becomes a reflection of the attitude of its inhabitants.
